Tips for Handling Stress

I feel like if 2020 can be summed up in a word, it might be this: stressful. Today, I’m sharing my tips for handling stress.

There is so much unknown, and so much chaos all around us it feels like. In normal life, we juggle work, school for some, kids for some, but now it’s like all of the normal stress of life has been multiplied by a thousand. Some of you are suddenly working from home, some of you may have lost your job, we are all still dealing with COVID and the general unrest in our country… the list goes on.

I’ve compiled a list of things I do when I start to get anxious. I hope it’s helpful to you and you find something on this list that works for you. If you have anything to add, please leave me a comment!

Tidy your environment. This is always step one for me when I start to feel overwhelmed. I usually feel 10x better when the area around me is neat and tidy.

Light a candle. This is such an obvious stress reliever for me. It goes hand-in-hand with tidying up. Even my husband knows, when either of us are stressed or anxious the first thing we need to do is tidy up and light a candle. It makes your home so much cozier and makes you feel more relaxed.

Take a bath or shower. Bubble baths are usually known as a stress reliever, but I’m more of a shower person. When I’m really stressing out sometimes it helps for me to just go take a shower – it’s kind of like a reset button when you get fresh and clean.

Make a cup of coffee or tea. I’m not a tea person but I loooove a good cup of coffee. It’s yummy but it’s also just a cozy drink.

Read some scripture. This is an OBVIOUS one. Once I’ve created a cozy space to relax and get my head on straight, I like to go to scripture for some comfort. Here are some of my favorite scriptures for comfort:

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul Ps 94:19

Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge. I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing” Ps. 16:1-2

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust Ps 91:1-2

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears  Ps. 34:4

God is within her, she will not fall. God will help her at the break of day Ps 46:5

Be still and know that I am God Ps 46:10

Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge Ps 62:8

The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? Ps 118:6

I am with you and I will rescue you, declares the Lord Jer 1:8

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world 1 John 4:4

I could keep going for a while, but I challenge you to look for some comforting verses on your own. There is so much comfort to be found in scripture if we just look for it. Worship music also helps! You can find my worship playlist here. God loves to cover us in His peace when we ask. Remember that I am only a DM on Instagram away if you are ever struggling and need a friend.
